I think that Trudeau was, indeed, a great prime minister. In other words, he was a worthy occupant of that office. He was somebody who saw Canada whole, who had a vision of Canada, who fought strongly for his vision, who fought consistently, and who also fought honestly. You were never really in any doubt as to where Trudeau stood on any of the big issues that confronted the country. On the other hand, he was not a great political leader. He wasn't a great leader of the Liberal party. There is some doubt that Trudeau really understood what party political leadership was. And so, increasingly, as time went on, the Liberal party aged with Trudeau. It did not renew itself and it suffered atrophy at its grassroots. I think that Trudeau is much to blame for his failure to tend the garden of politics that had to surround the image of statesmanship.
